Description
This dual purpose apparatus provides a compact facility for
the measurement of the velocity of sound in air and also for
the analysis of standing waves. It requires an audio signal
generator and a dual beam oscilloscope with power being
provided by a PP3 9V battery. To make a direct measurement
of the speed of sound the sensitive microphone is moved
against the scale while noting the two traces on the CRO
which gives the time delay between successive waves.
The value is found from the measurements of time and
distance. With the reflector in place a standing wave can
be generated. Nodes and antinodes can easily be seen
from the amplitude variations on the CRO.
